Europe and Middle East Hub

Intro

Collaboration Strategy

As of right now, most of the work on the nexus of climate, migration and health is conducted in the majority world. One possible explanation is that climatic and environmental factors have little or no relevance for human health and migration patterns. However, climate impacts are increasing and intensifying in the Global minority.

In 2024, Europe was the fast-warming continent on the planet. Losses and damages associated with disasters such as floods, landslides and drought have been increasing immensely over the last years. Hence, as of right now, there is a significant gap of research on the connection between climate, migration and health.

The European Hub is coordinated by the Department of Geography at Heidelberg University and the Climate and Migration Division (EMIC) at United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security.

Projects and activities

  • Mapping of climate-related planned relocations and retreat in Europe
  • Outcome assessments of climate-related planned relocation and retreat cases in Europe (e.g. Slovenia, Austria) with a focus on well-being and health outcomes
  • Connect European decision-makers working on climate-related planned relocations

Aims

  • Establish the European Hub with strong partners
  • Convene regional members in Europe working on the nexus of climate, migration and health
